Free Radicals

We come into this world with healthy cells, but every day the negative effects of free radicals add to the damage of the previous day. In fact, many of the processes we call "aging" are simply evidence of the minute, cumulative effects of free radical damage on cells and tissues in the skin, heart, blood vessels, brain, and so forth. What are free radicals and, more importantly, how can free radical damage be prevented? The answer lies with antioxidants, the molecules that fight free radicals.

What Are Free Radicals?

Your body produces thousands of free radicals every day; very simply, they are molecules that have an odd number of electrons. Normally electrons appear in pairs and so when a free radical forms, it basically tries to snatch its missing electron from molecules around it. That molecule then ends up with an unpaired electron of its own, which it then tries to match- so it then starts to repeat the process. This constant chopping and changing eventually damages the cell. You may have heard that antioxidants fight free radical damage. The reason is that they donate an electron to any unpaired molecules, which stops them from having to steal them from those within your cells.

How Antioxidants Work

Antioxidants are stable molecules with electrons to spare; they also have the ability to receive extra electrons. Antioxidants are nature's defence against the damaging effects of free radicals. They guard cellular structures and DNA against electron-scavenging free radicals. Antioxidants can donate or receive electrons to neutralise free radicals, stopping the cascading effect of oxidation.

Skinceuticals are the authority in antioxidant serums .

In 1997, SkinCeuticals changed the face of skincare with the introduction of Serum 10 and Serum 15, the company’s first stabilised, pure L-ascorbic acid topical antioxidants
SkinCeuticals founding scientist Dr. Sheldon Pinnell conducted research about antioxidant formulation and discovered specific formulation factors, now known as the Duke Antioxidant patent. SkinCeuticals is the only brand to formulate antioxidants according to these standards. Since they have released CE Ferulic and Phloretin.
